Significant Experience:
Early in 1990 I was appointed leader of a program to integrate an American aviation engine onto a Russian commercial wide body airplane. This program came to be a technical success as signified by certification of the airplane’s design by both the Russian Aviation Registry and the US Federal Aviation Administration. The airplane has not yet entered commercial service for reasons which prove enlightening in understanding integration of western and emerging economies.
A review of the history of this program, beginning when Russia was still in the USSR, will show that integration of technical components into the airplane by US and Russian engineers was challenging but achievable, while integration of business plans and financing was much more difficult. There were two major business issues that were faced in this program. The first was solved successfully. The second, although hindsight reveals possibilities of success present by 1999, could be much more easily solved in the more liquid and orderly Russian business environment of today. It is realization that success of any program in an emerging economy requires total attention to technical and economic issues which led to the choice of “International Business Integration” in selecting a name for my LLC.
